ON a routine patrol, one of CPS Security’s tactical members were contacted by SAPS for assistance as they received a call saying an off-duty metro police officer witnessed a hijacking in Lindeque Street, Meyersdal, on December 28 at 2.30pm.
He informed the SAPS officer that as he drove past he saw armed suspects hijacking a DHL courier vehicle. The driver of the DHL vehicle ran away and the van was taken by one of the suspects. The suspects’ getaway vehicle was a silver polo which had three other males in the vehicle.
He kept eyes on the vehicle and began to follow them.
“Our tactical units caught up to the getaway car and the off-duty metro police officer on the corner of Michelle Avenue and Comaro Street. The suspects in the polo attempted to flee, but were apprehended by our tactical members after they got boxed in by traffic on the corner of Bellairs Drive and Klipriver Road,” said Tyrone van der Merwe, sales director.
The three suspects in the polo were arrested on scene. The suspect who took the DHL vehicle dumped the car and managed to escape.
“Upon further investigation, we discovered the suspects’ car had false number plates and contained cable ties (used to tie up the victims) and narcotics. We believe the three arrested suspects can be linked to several other incidents involving courier companies. The suspects were taken to Mondeor SAPS and a case was opened,” van der Merwe told the RECORD.
“We would like to inform the public that the festive season is over and criminals will be active again. We urge the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to our control room immediately.
“The public is also welcome to give us any crime related information via our Facebook page. All information will remain confidential and people can stay anonymous,” he concluded.
