Female runners get ready for Soweto marathon

The Old Mutual Soweto Marathon will take place on November 4.

The 25th edition of the Old Mutual Soweto Marathon continues to provide platforms for athletes to help them ‘Run their Great’, this time in the form of a free interactive workshop for women.

The seminar will host 170 registered women runners at the FNB Stadium Auditorium, on August 25. Industry experts shared their knowledge on topics ranging from financial planning and nutrition to mental strength and, of course, training for the big day on November 4.

“With August being Women’s Month, we are focused on empowering the women who will tackle this year’s Old Mutual Soweto Marathon by providing them with powerful information to help them ‘Run their Great’ and reach their personal goals,” said Soweto Marathon Trust chairperson Sello Khunou.

“We recognise that women play multiple roles and we encourage them to unleash their greatest selves in all facets of their lives. Beyond strategies on running the race itself, we will discuss strategies on supporting a running lifestyle in relation to life, family responsibilities, nutrition and more.”

Thobile Tshabalala, Old Mutual’s head of brand, said, “We are proud to support this initiative, and we believe empowering women to take the small steps that lead to great things is critically important for the well-being of our communities, as well as the growth of our national economy.”

Speakers at the workshop included expert coach Lindsey Parry, as well as 2017 second finisher, the dynamic Mapaseka Makhanya, 2017 winner Irvette van Zyl and representatives from the City of Joburg, Old Mutual and FutureLife. The esteemed panel included chief medical officer Dr Lervasen Pillay, who joined this panel for the second time, as well as Duma Sisulu who paid tribute to Ma Albertina Sisulu.
