Interviewing Mikee Goodman from SikTh
The band has done approximately 30 tours across the world since their establishment in 1999.
THIS year sees UK tech-metal pioneers SikTh and US metalcore titans Miss May I headlining, along with the very best the South African music scene has to offer, all lined up for the Kank’d Up festival.
Now in its seventh year, one of South Africa’s foremost alternative, rock and metal festivals, Krank’d Up 2018, will take place on September 29 at Sundowners, close to Alberton, Johannesburg.
The RECORD had the privilege to interview Mikee Goodman from the progressive metal band, SikTh, who will be one of the two international bands headlining at the upcoming Krank’d up Music Festival at Sundowners this year.
SikTh is a progressive/tech-metal band formed in Hertfordshire, England back in 1999. What makes this band unique, is their eclectic approach to making music – they don’t stick to one specific genre, as they admire many different styles.
The band has also done approximately 30 tours across the world since their establishment. They have seven albums out in total, of which are three studio albums and four EP albums.
Their studio albums include The Trees Are Dead & Dried Out Wait for Something Wild, Death Of A Dead Day and The Future In Whose Eyes? The EP albums include Let The Transmitting Begin, How May I Help You, Flogging The Horses and Opacities.
Some of SikTh’s musical influences include Dillinger Escape Plan, Korn and System Of A Down, among many others. They have stated that their music is influenced by various metal, rock and hardcore elements.
In a previous interview, the band elaborated on their musical style: “Energy has always inspired us. We play extreme music, but extreme also includes extremely beautiful melodic music.”
SikTh currently consists of six band members: Mikee Goodman (vocals), Joe Rosser (vocals), Dan Weller (guitar and piano), Graham Pinney (guitar), James Leach (bass guitar) and Dan Foord (drums and percussion).
The RECORD had a brief phone interview with Mikee, who talked about the upcoming festival and his expectations of South Africa.
AR: Have you been to South Africa before?
MG: No, I’ve never been to the African continent before and neither has my bandmates.
AR: What are your expectations for when you visit our country?
MG: I’ve heard that your local crowds need a bit of motivation to get energised. Hopefully, we can conjure up their energy through our music. I’m sure they’ll be a great crowd, though, despite what I’ve heard.
AR: Do you know any of our local bands and do you have opinions about them that you’d like to share?
MG: We definitely like Die Antwoord. They’re so different and artistic – a really good band. Other than them, we’re not very familiar with the South African music scene.
AR: What do you look forward to most about the upcoming Krank’d Up festival?
MG: We look forward to going to South Africa and seeing a completely different crowd and being in a completely different place.
AR: How many songs will you be performing?
MG: We’ll be playing around an hour’s worth of songs and we’ll perform songs from each of our albums.
AR: Is there anything that you’re nervous or concerned about?
MG: We have heard that there are some dangerous places in South Africa. We hope we’ll be safe and that nothing bad will happen.
AR: Is there any message that you’d like to share with Alberton’s metalcore fans?
MG: I just wanted to share that I am also a voice producer in my spare time, as well as a casting director for a game called Disco Elysium (check out www.ZaumStudio.com). I enjoy photography and videography as well as music. For the fans, I’d like to ask to please spread the word about us if you like our music. We’d love to play for you more often and grow our South African fan base. We’re very excited to meet you.
