Palm Ridge accident leaves two dead, 18 injured

People were found lying on the road. Their injuries ranged from moderate to fatal.

TWO passengers were instantly killed and 18 others, including drivers, were hospitalised after they were involved in a crash between two light motor vehicles and a minibus taxi in Palm Ridge on the night of July 27.

At around 10.22pm, Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) rescue teams and paramedics from Palm Ridge and Zonkizizwe fire stations, simultaneously responded to the intersection of Palm-ridge and M7 roads in Palm Ridge after receiving the call from the call centre.On arrival, people were found lying on the road. Their injuries ranged from moderate to fatal. Pre-hospital medical treatment was initiated and but two were declared dead on scene.

CARNAGE: One of the cars and the mini bus looked horrible after the crash. Blood stains and broken glass could be seen all around.

One driver, with critical injuries, was airlifted to Randfontein hospital for further medical care. The other patients were transported via ambulance to various hospitals around Ekurhuleni.

Rescuers had to use hydraulic rescue tools (Jaws of Life) to free some of the trapped passengers from the minibus taxi.

The road had to be closed for the duration of the operations. The scene was handed over to EMPD officers for further investigations.

TERRIBLE: The crashed vehicles on the scene of the accident in Palm Ridge were beyond repair.
