Vagrancy causes deterioration of property

Despite numerous attempts to remove squatters from Meyersdal, they remain as there is nowhere for them to go.

RESIDENTS have raised concerns about the increasing number of people living on the streets on the corner of Hennie Alberts Street and Michelle Avenue.

The people using this stretch of land leave the area in a state and leads to the deterioration of the surrounding area. This problem has been ongoing for some time despite numerous attempts by residents of the area to get the metro to remove the people from the streets.

According to Alderman Bruna Haipel, ward councillor for the area, the metro is aware of the issue and attempts have been made to move these people in the past.

“EMPD have removed the squatters a couple of times, but there is nowhere to place them so they come back,” said Haipel. “As long as people give them money, and the churches feed them, they will be back,” she added.

According to Haipel she has been trying to assist Life On The Streets (LOTS) to lease some council land in order to give these people a place to go, but as of yet there are no developments.
