Charity shops essential for hospice’s survival

“Whether you donate your second-hand goods or buy from us, or whether you volunteer to work in our shops, it all adds up and helps to keep our hospice’s doors open”

“THE impact of donations to our charity shops and the sale of these items can never be underestimated, as it makes up at least 60 per cent of the shortfall on our annual budgeted income,” said Tersia Burger, CEO of Stepping Stone Hospice & Care Services.

Tersia was reacting to a statement from hospice’s retail manager, Brenda Peach, in which she thanked the community for their continued support.

“Whether you donate your second-hand goods or buy from us, or whether you volunteer to work in our shops, it all adds up and helps to keep our hospice’s doors open so that we can continue with the services we provide,” said Brenda.

Tersia echoed Brenda’s sentiments in thanking the community.

“We are truly blessed and forever grateful,” she said.

Stepping Stone Hospice opened its first Charity Shop a year ago on June 1 in the Alberton Mall, opposite Springbok Pharmacy. Earlier this year, the second Charity Shop opened its doors in the Stats Building in Fore Street, New Redruth.

“We’ve really grown over the past year, learnt a few valuable lessons along the way and believe that we offer something very unique to our town,” said Brenda.

For the charity shops to continue to grow, Stepping Stone Hospice is dependent on members of the public donating all their unwanted goods.

“You may believe your donation is not worth much, but for us it is immeasurable.”

If you have any household items that you would like to donate, kindly contact Brenda on 083 289 0380 or email brenda@steppingstonehospice.co.za. Items can be collected. Alternatively, the items can be taken to either one of the two shops. Both shops are open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and Saturday from 9am to 2pm.
