Alberton Madalas honour top achievers

Madalas' chairman Danie Putter can be rightly proud of what the club has achieved this year.

ALBERTON Madalas Rugby Club hosted its annual awards evening at the Union Rugby Club lapa in Kibler Park, recognising the clubā€™s top achievers for the year.

Chairman Danie Putter can be rightly proud of what the club has achieved this year, not only in the results of their games, but also having been given the honour of hosting the National Golden Oldies festival at the Alberton Rugby Club, but also having the honour of playing in the final game.

The chairman award for the over 40 category was awarded to Clayton Hollenbach, partly for the effort he put in organising a festival of this nature. It was by all accounts very successful and must have required a lot of hard work. Well done Clayton.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Louis Bosman (middle) with Danie Putter and Jack Wagner.

In his address, Putter also made strong mention of the unsung heroes of the club, the wives and family of the players, for allowing the players to go on tours to participate in festivals or even support them by going with. Indeed, without their support, the club would certainly not thrive as it is doing.

One aspect that stood out for me is the spirit in the club. From the players to the wives and families they are a very tight unit.

PLAYER’S CHOICE: Johan Edwards (middle) with Danie Putter and Jack Wagner.

The players range from 35 to 65 in age and even players with special medical conditions can participate. Certain players wear red pants and certain gold, depending on the severity of the disability. At a recent Barbarians festival, for example, one of the players from Benoni Grizzlies was playing with pins and plates in his back. If he gets tackled too hard he could end up paralysed. Players that wear red are only allowed to be held and brought to ground while players that wear gold can’t be tackled at all but can only progress a few metres before passing. This makes the game accessible to everyone.

The most important award winners were:

Louis Bosman ā€“ chairmanā€™s u-40 player of the year. Clayton Hollenbach ā€“ chairmanā€™s over 40 player of the year. Eddie du Plessis ā€“ most loyal players player of the year. Apies Kotze ā€“ best try of the year. Johan Edwards ā€“ players player of the year over 40. Morne Killian ā€“ forward of the year and Kelton Kuntz ā€“ backline player of the year.
