Silwerkroon lift saga continues

Spoke to the repairman today and he told me the work has been completed

Letter to alderman Bruna Haipel, November 27.

We the residents have had our fair share of shock, anger, frustration and disbelief when it comes to the lift at Silwerkroon.

We highly value your efforts on our behalf in this regard. By your keeping me in the loop, I have been able to keep abreast of developments, or maybe I should say lack of developments, and to pass on information to other residents.

However, I am puzzled, as the communications have dried up and nothing seems to be happening.

A contractor, company unknown, called almost two weeks ago and started work on the lift, much to our great excitement. They dismantled the motor and had great difficulty in manhandling it to the ground floor. It was loaded onto a vehicle and taken away for reconditioning. From what I have been led to understand, this is the major work that needs doing.

We are fast approaching the end of November, and we were assured the lift would be back in operation by now.

Our concern is beginning to mount.

Residents are also becoming excited, which is quite natural for this time of the year. Each one is starting to make their plans for celebrating the festive season.

It is also the beginning of the “silly season”, where in the business world very little or indeed nothing gets done until after the first month of the new year. Having a working lift would be like a special Christmas present to each and every one at Silwerkroon.

I am not a mechanically minded person, but by no stretch of the imagination can reconditioning a motor take all this time. Are we again to fall victim to a municipality that is notoriously a bad payer for services? Is the contractor waiting for payment before proceeding with the repairs?

Could you please check on our behalf and let me know what is happening?

Thanks and regards,

Don Jansen, just one of the many disgruntled residents

Follow-up letter, December 6:

Spoke to the repairman today and he told me the work has been completed. Now it is up to the inspector of the government department concerned to come check the work done and approve its use by the residents/public.

Now all we need for Christmas is for the inspector not to drag his heels.

Don Jansen
