Alberton High MTB club takes part in the Germiston Classic

Five of the Alberton High MTB team participated in this well-known charity cycling event, with all the members doing the 34 km distance.

ALBERTON High School’s Mountain Biking (MTB) club recently took part in the 34th Annual Carnival City Macsteel race, fondly known by the cycling industry as the Germiston Classic Cycle Race.

The race took place during the weekend of October 28 and 29, was sponsored by Carnival City and Macsteel and is organised every year by the Germiston Wheelers Cycle Club and the Germiston Rotary.

“The Rotarians look after the admin, sponsorship and financial aspects of the race while the Germiston Wheelers plan and manage the cycling-related activities. The main aim of the race is to raise funds for local charities, mainly the National Council of SPCA’s, Amcare and the Elandsvallei Home for the Aged. The popular race, which is currently the third biggest cycling event in Gauteng, also gives back to amateur cycling by helping with the development of youngsters from nearby townships who are interested in the sport of cycling,” says Emma Griffin-Coetzer.

The second annual MTB race took place on the Saturday, while the classic road race was on the Sunday. The road race distances remained the same, with the exception of the route that was lengthened to 125 km for the licensed males. The other distances of 103 km and 65 km have remained unchanged since 2006. The MTB race event featured distances ranging from the kiddies 1-3 km, 6 km, 12 km, 30 km and 60 km. All the MTB riders started from inside Carnival City and completed a 5.2 km circuit before leaving the grounds and riding in the area south of the R554. The track was described as fast and flat with a combination of single, jeep track and district roads.

Online entries were handled by Cycle Events while the race was timed by Racetec. 32GI supplied the necessary refreshments on the day for all the riders and the Road Rangers ensured safety aspects were adhered to as per protocol and ABI covered the road race aspects. A trail run of 4.9km and 9.8km were added to this year’s event.

Five of the Alberton High MTB team participated in this well-known charity cycling event, with all the members doing the 34 km distance. Completed times were competitive, ranging from one hour and 25 minutes to one hour and 45 minutes. “All the riders thoroughly enjoyed the route and will definitely be returning in 2018 for another round of Carnival City Cycle Racing,” adds Griffin-Coetzer.
