Residents receive incorrect valuations

"I am wondering if it is a ploy by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, so that nobody will be able to get their objection in before their cut-off date, May 5 - or is this truly incompetence?"

MANY residents in Alberton are in a state after receiving incorrect valuations for their properties.

Questions are being asked about how this could possibly happen and many are certain corruption is involved.

“Residents across Ekurhuleni started receiving notices signed by Dr Imogen Mashazi, City Manager, informing them of the valuation of their properties. Unfortunately someone has made a mockery of this exercise,” says Alderman Bruna Haipel.

“Every single valuation is for the incorrect property. I also wish to point out that residents were totally unaware that valuations were being done and the closing date for objections is May 5.

“What was the Metro waiting for before informing the residents to go and check the roll? Whose responsibility is it to make sure that residents get the correct information at the right time?” Ald Haipel asked.

“I notice that Ekurhuleni has sent out new valuations for implementation on July 1. I have received a valuation for a property that I have never owned and don’t even know where it is. It looks like the integrity of the database at Ekurhuleni has been compromised because I am not the only one that has had this experience and it seems to be widespread,” said one resident affected by this.

“I am wondering if it is a ploy by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, so that nobody will be able to get their objection in before their cut-off date, May 5 – or is this truly incompetence, employing people to receive a salary for not being able to do their job correctly?” asks LD van Tonder, yet another resident with this complaint.

One of the home-owners points out that there have been several irregularities, like massive differences in the value of their property, meaning they have to pay more on rates and taxes, etc.

Ald Haipel says the Municipal Manager has been notified and they are claiming there has been a blunder with the “mail merge” and that they will look at rectifying the matter.

The RECORD is awaiting the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s response on this matter and we will update our readers as soon as more information becomes available.
