Swimming pool construction to resume

The aim was to complete construction by September 2017.

CONSTRUCTION of the swimming pool in Eden Park has been on hold for about six months. In November 2016 the gates were locked and nobody was seen on site.

During that time it was alleged that negotiations were taking place to find a solution regarding contracts for certain workers.

A ray of light has now emerged. A meeting was called by Rico Reneke of Sports and Recreation. The meeting was held on Wednesday, February 8, at the site, where all stakeholders and the community were invited.

Reneke reported that progress has been made with regard to the negotiations, which took place over the past three months.

He mentioned that the council has terminated its contract with the current constructor, and that it will appoint or identify a new constructor, who should start working within the next seven to 14 days.

He further said that new negotiations will take place, and new sub-constructors and a new steering committee will be appointed and that the way forward will then be determined.

Reneke also reported that all present contracts will be honoured, and agreements will be struck to make use of the local trainees who completed the construction course, as was agreed upon.

He said the aim was to complete construction by September 2017.
