Magnifying glass over illegal building

One of the houses in question had what looked like shacks (corrugated metal sheets) built onto the garage.

THE RECORD has received many complaints and concerns from residents in Alberton regarding illegal building recently.

Many of these complaints are about houses in Florentia, and some seemed to be dead-ends.

The one address given showed no signs of building, while another was an existing house that was being rented out.

This homeowner commented: “I am renting this house out, which is fully my right and according to the law. I can rent out the house and two rooms on the property. I am currently busy with Ekurhuleni to get the property rezoned so I can get more tenants if I so choose, and I have done no building on my property,” said the owner.

One of the houses in question had what looked like shacks (corrugated metal sheets) built onto the garage, but the neighbour said it is used as an elongated garage for all the owner’s vehicles. It appears the owner of this house did not get approval for this, which is required as it is a permanent structure with foundations and similar.

The RECORD advises and urges all homeowners to speak to the municipality before doing any renovations or building of any kind, as permission and plans for this are required by law.

The RECORD contacted the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality for comment, but they did not respond to our requests.
