UPDATE: Caylum’s operation is a success

Caylum is doing much better. Read the update on Caylum's operation here.

BABY Caylum underwent an operation at the Boston Children’s Hospital on Friday, December 2.

Five hours into the operation, Dr Rusty Jennings had finished the prep work and had removed all the scar tissue.

Seven hours into the surgical procedure, the Willemse family was told that everything was going well and the doctors would be busy with Caylum for a few more hours.

At this stage, it was nine and a half hours into surgery and Caylum was doing great.

The operation went well and Caylum now has an open airway for the first time in his life!

Dr Jennings said he has managed to get the airway almost completely open.

In a post by the Willemses on Facebook, they explained Caylum decided to pull out his vent as he came out of the operating room but he is doing so well that the doctors aren’t going to put it back in.

Parents Wayne and Samantha Willemse confirmed that Caylum was on a lot of pain medication and even a pain-block which is like an epidural and numbs his one side.

On Saturday, December 3 at about 08:00 the parents posted again saying that they all had a difficult night as Caylum was not allowed to drink and cried the whole night. Later the next day he was allowed liquids and is safe and recovering well.

The family posted on Sunday, December 4 that Caylum is doing much better and even smiled. “Hopefully the drain and pain-block will come out. What an amazing God we serve,” read the post.
