Municipal accounts causing headaches

When I try discussing this with them they just do not understand.

SEVERAL residents seem to be struggling with their municipal accounts and say they get no joy from the municipality.

“We have lived in our house for 44 years and have always been up to date with municipal rates and water and light accounts. We have a postal address, but we receive our monthly statements two weeks after the due date. The site they list was down, so we had no idea what amount to pay and thus waited for the statement. Before that arrived, we received a final notice of demand to pay our account ‘or else’. This notice cost us R116.28,” says Beryl Donnelly.

Another ratepayer, wishing to stay anonymous, says he is very concerned. “Are there any other ratepayers that have a query on their account which is payable by the end of August? Being a pensioner, I email the municipality my electricity and water readings on or about the same date each month, which assists me with my monthly budgeting.

“I have been doing this for over 10 years and my readings have always been captured and I got fantastic service. However, this month the readings captured were the readings from their meter reading company which were 10 days after my readings were sent in, so the monthly account was for six weeks and not the normal four weeks.

“As a result, my budget has gone out the window. When I try discussing this with them they just do not understand.

“I would be interested to see whether or not other ratepayers had the same query,” says the man.

The RECORD contacted the EMM regarding these issues, but after more than a week, they failed to comment.
