Suspect in house-breaking shot

A suspect has been shot and critically wounded after breaking into a townhouse in Elandshaven.

A SUSPECT has been shot and critically wounded after allegedly breaking into a townhouse in Elandshaven.

The family living in the home in question was fast asleep in the early hours of Sunday morning, June 26.

According to the victim, the suspect first tried to gain entry via the sliding door, but failed. He then managed to gain entry through a window.

It was at this stage that the victim heard a noise and realised someone was trying to break in.

“The suspect was not deterred when I shouted for him to leave, so I fired a warning shot, but this still did not stop him,” said the owner of the house.”He had a knife and screwdriver with which he was threatening me, so I shot him out of fear and in order to protect my wife and children.”

A concerned tenant in the complex contacted the Alberton CPF (Community Policing Forum), who arrived on scene within minutes of the shooting.

CPF members managed to contact the SAPS, as well as a trauma counsellor, to help the victim’s family.

CPS Security assisted by securing the scene and arranging emergency medical services on site.

“Alberton CPF would like to thank Matthew from CPS Security, the SAPS and SOG for their sterling efforts, and we want to commend the 11 or so CPF members who braved the cold in order to assist a family of the community in a time of need,” said Derek Gouws, deputy chairman of the forum.

Derek says all residents are welcome to contact him on his cell, at 078 653 6608, or by e-mail at derek.gouws@ekurhuleni.gov.za.
