Alberton SPCA needs your help

Quaranttine kennels are urgently needed at the Alberton SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).

QUARANTINE kennels are urgently needed at the Alberton SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).

“We urgently need these kennels for the health and safety of our animals. This, along with proper drainage, is very important in this regard,” says Kingstone Siziba, manager of the Alberton SPCA.

Quarantine kennels are there to separate animals brought in from various places, like the townships, where it is unlikely that they have been immunised, so as not to expose the other animals to any possible diseases the outsiders may have.

The period for which the animals need to be separated is six days, in accordance with the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) bylaws.

“The problem is that we do not have funds to build these special kennels, so we need help from the public. We plan to hold a golf day in September to help us raise funds for this purpose,” added Siziba.

According to the manager, all the dogs in the kennels had to be put down in 2014, when they were exposed to Canine Distemper, a highly contagious viral disease, for which there is no cure.

This could have been prevented if the society had the necessary facilities to quarantine animals brought in from outside their property.”We had to close down for two weeks and disinfect everything, and we couldn’t take in any animals; they had to be diverted to other places, so it was a bad time for us,”, says Siziba, adding: “We plan to build approximately 12 of these kennels once we are able, so that we can prevent any future disasters like the one we experienced in 2014.”

Siziba is asking everyone to please help the society to raise money, so they can build these very important kennels and continue doing the good work they do.

The Alberton SPCA can be contacted on 011 907 1568 or 071 626 0721, or visit their kennels and look at their facilities, at 29 Heidelberg Road, Lincoln Road, General Alberts Park.
