THE RECORD reported earlier on the shooting in the area of the Reading Country Club and New Redrruth Village. Since then, we have received more information.

According to the media liaison (who wishes to remain anonymous) for the CPS, there was no shooting.

“On a routine patrol in the new redruth area, Alberton one of our reaction units spotted a hijacking in progress in Camborne Rd.

A blue sedan with 2-3 black males had stopped behind a lady who had just pulled into her driveway. As she was exiting her car two men approached her. One grabbing her and one pointed a pistol at her.  At this time the third suspect was sitting inside the get-away vehicle.

Once they saw they were spotted, the suspects warned each other and made a run for the getaway car but the car left the two suspects behind. One suspect was apprehended by our reaction team after he tried to flee on foot and the second one escaped. One unlicensed firearm was found in the suspects possession.

Alberton saps, Germiston Flying Squad, SAPS Dog Unit and the Airwing was dispatched to assist us”, said the CPS spokesperson.

Sergeant Phora Nkuna, Alberton SAPS spokesperson, had this to say: “One black male, aged 28, was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm after they tried to get into a yard, but when they noticed a security vehicle approaching, they ran back to their car.

“The driver drove away leaving the three males behind. The police were notified and the suspects were chased. One suspect was arrested and found in possession of a firearm with serial number filed off. The others are still at large and the search continues. The arrested suspect will appear at Palm Ridge Court to answer to the charges.”
