Dance With Me Master Chef Potjiekos Challenge

A potjiekos competition will be held on October 5 with great prizes to be won for the best pot of the day.

THE competition will take place on October 5 at GAC Germiston with awesome family and friend’s entertainment and loads of fun like boat rides, water sports and many more.

Potjie Competition rules:

1. Competition is open to anyone, but right of admission is reserved.

2. Deadline for entries: September 20.

3. Entrance fee per team is R150.

4. Participants must kindly donate their own ingredients for the potjie which will be sold at R30 a plate. (All income will be put towards the fund).

5. Participants may reserve plate ticket to preferred friends and family.

6. Participants must bring all equipment that is needed to prepare the potjie.

7. Potjies can start cooking from 10:00.

8. One team member must be at the stand at all times.

9. Potjies will be judged at GAC – Germiston Lake. Judges decisions are final.

10. Participants must clean their own area, leaving it in the same condition as found.

11. There will be a prize for the best dressed team and for the team with the most spirit.

12. DWM will not be held responsible for any loss or damage to equipment or personal belongings.

Cook site competition judging criteria:

1. Judges will visit all the cooking sites during the afternoon while potjies are being prepared.

2. Judges will be scoring the cooking area on the general spirit of the team, originality, preparation techniques and general impressions.

Potjie rules:

1. All potjies must be prepared from scratch on the day of the competition. Prior marinating will be allowed.

2. All entries must be cooked in a traditional cast iron pot/potjie.

3. Potjies can be cooked over wood, coals or gas burners.

4. Potjie can be made from any ingredients.

Potjies will be judged on the following criteria: aroma, overall flavour, distinctive aroma’s (spices, meat and vegetables), colour, natural colour – attractive, appealing, taste, savouring, quality, flavour, spices used, texture, feel or appearance of food, interpretation of meats and vegetables, ingredients, use of unusual ingredients or cooking techniques (does not mean expensive ingredients will score more), work area cleanliness, use of own implements, table cleanliness, hygiene, cleaning up afterwards, overall potjieness and layering of food – not stew.

First prize will consist of seven nights stay (eight sleeper) at Durban Spa in 2014 (accommodation only) worth R6 500. Second prize is R1 100 plus two months free dance lessons (group only). Third prize is R800 plus one month free dance lessons (group only).
