Municipal worker killed

A team of municipal workers were attacked while working over Easter weekend resulting in one fatality.

THE murder of municipal worker, Taelo Kekana (43) in Palm Ridge over the Easter weekend has been greeted with shock by the executive mayor of Ekurhuleni, Clr Mondli Gungubele.

The man was attacked while responding to a sewer complaint as part of a six-member team of the Ekurhuleni Water and Sanitation Department. As the team was investigating the complaint the members were attacked by four men. Kekana was killed in the attack. Another member of the team, Samuel Manje, was injured. Manje was discharged from hospital over the weekend. Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the fatal attack.

“We are still trying to make sense of this incident. Workers attend to a sewer blockage in an area and before they know it they are attacked and a life is lost. What do you make of such an incident?” said Gungubele.

Gungubele conveyed the City’s deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. He further wished Samuel Manje a speedy recovery.

The mayor, the MMC for water and energy Clr Doctor Xhakaza and the City’s chief operations officer Dr Imogen Mashazi visited the family of the deceased and the site where the incident took place on Monday, March 28.

“Let me thank those members of the community, SAPS, Ekurhuleni Metro Police and the local taxi association for their swift response to the incident, which resulted in the arrest of the suspects,” Gungubele said.
