15-year-old drowns in muddy pool

His cousins and friends realised too late that Levert was nowhere to be seen.

A GROUP of teenagers decided to go swimming to cool off not knowing that one of them would not come back home alive.

On Thursday, March 15, when temperatures rose again, Levert Louw (15) a Grade Eight learner at Eden Park Secondary School, his cousins and friends went swimming near Greenfields but Levert never returned home alive. He drowned in a deep furrow where water pipes were being laid.

According to Levert’s cousin, Levert could not swim. “While swimming we saw him undress and jump into the muddy water. We helped one boy who almost drowned and realised that Levert was nowhere to be seen,” he said.

The friends alleged that when they ultimately found Levert under the water, he was stuck with his head down in the clay and mud, and his feet towards the surface.

“He was the eldest of my three children. He was a quiet and friendly boy and I am going to miss him so,” said the single, unemployed mother of three, Katie Louw (46).

Levert’s funeral will be held on Saturday, March 26, and the Eden Park community is asked to help the bereaved mother and family in any way possible. The family resides at 5031 Gibson Kente Street in Riemvasmaak Extension Five.
