Think before you flush …

How skipping the flush can make all the difference in helping the environment. Here are five tips to help you reduce water wastage.

Doing your bit to help reduce your water consumption is crucial, as many parts of SA are facing drought conditions and water is becoming increasingly more precious…and it  all starts by simply skipping the flush. Older types of toilets use up to 26 litres of fresh water on just one flush, while newer models only use up to 7 litres. So start by upgrading your toilet, if possible, and then consider the following tips from Organico:

  1. If you cannot install a modern toilet right now, simply place a plastic bottle filled with water in your toilet tank to reduce the amount of water needed to flush.
  2. Check regularly to see if your toilet is leaking, as this could cause massive water wastage. To check, simply put food dye into the tank water, and if the colour appears in the bowl, you have a leak and should call your plumber.
  3. Adopt the saying: “if it’s yellow, let it mellow” and implement it in your household. There is no need to always flush after a number one.
  4. Don’t flush any other items down the toilet. It could only cause blockages and it is a waste of water to flush something that can be thrown away in a dustbin or recycled.
  5. Opt for an eco-friendly treatment product for toilets, pit latrines and septic tanks that uses natural micro-organisms and enzymes to degrade fecal waste and all waste matter. This action combined with its carefully formulated fragrance, reduces waste and eliminates odour, while preventing insects attracted to the smell, thereby decreasing the risk of spreading germs.
