How to make your next family holiday the best one yet

Five steps to a fab, family getaway with First Group Hotels and Resorts.

The winter school holidays are around the corner, which means it’s time for you to put together a holiday itinerary that’ll make the whole family excited to pack their bags. First Group Hotels and Resorts have 5 super tips to help you pull off the ultimate family getaway:

  1. Choose a new destination: Yes, it’s easier to go to the same camping spot as last year, but it’s so much more exciting to try a new resort with all the bells and whistles! And you won’t blow your budget, as many local places are offering fantastic deals as they try to encourage visitors after the COVID slump. Do your travel research as a family to get excitement levels up ahead of departure.
  2. Make a bucket list: Epic holidays are not all about how much money you spend, but more about the experiences and memories you create as a family. See more sights (you can do this from the car); try new activities (a hike is free); or try different foods that you would not usually eat. Get the kids involved in creating a fun bucket list of adventures and outings to tick off.
  3. Invite your friends: The more the merrier (not only socially, but also for your budget). Going away in a big group often works out cheaper not only for accommodation, but also for meals as you can share meals and braai duty. Bonus: the kids will be thrilled to have their friends come along, giving you more adult time too.
  4. Extend your stay: It usually takes a few days to fully unwind, and often just as you start relaxing, it is time to go home. If your budget allows, extend your stay to reap the maximum benefit from your R and R.
  5. Start a tradition: It can be as simple as always taking a photo at your holiday destination’s “Welcome” sign or buying a souvenir fridge magnet to take home. Whatever you decide on, stick with it to create a family tradition you will always cherish.
