Kwa-Thema – Covid-19 has rapidly defined what people were accustoming to as normal.
As the world continues to battle the pandemic, artists are trying to find ways to adapt to this ‘new normal’, with events and performances indefinitely halted.
Locally acclaimed artist Savage Sossa spoke to African Reporter about surviving as an artist during Covid-19.
“I decided to take down all my music from digital platforms such as Spotify.
“I am selling my music, people send me a WhatsApp requesting the song then I send the song to them. They then send me the money via electronic funds transfer (EFT).
“I have been able to sell even though it is slow, but at least I get something in return since I can’t perform anywhere,” he said.
He added that it hasn’t been easy for artists.
“So far it seems to be working as everything else I tried previously wasn’t working.
“I can also say that cutting out the middle man hasn’t been such a bad idea as it has given me the option to take matters into my own hands.
“I can see the sales immediately.
“With some of these digital platforms you need to have millions of streams before you can see some sales,” he explained.
He is working in studio on new music.
Local rapper’s song to play on national television
“I’m working on my second album which will be strictly hip-hop.
“The album is inspired by my life, personal experiences and my marriage.
“I’m working with more than one producer and all these producers are new, except for two,” he said.
The album will be named The Wolf of all Streets.
“My previous work had a lot of radio songs and a lot of commercially appealing songs.
“This one is strictly for hip-hop lovers.
“The name is inspired by the movie The Wolf of Wall Street,” he said.
In the meantime, fans can look forward to a new single which will debut at the end of March or beginning of April.
Featuring the likes of Protag of the Hullabaloos, the song is titled I don’t know what you need.
