Fatal accident raises concern

Road safety concerns on school road

A fatal accident on Ramona Road in Selcourt last Monday morning has highlighted road safety concerns in the area.
The accident took place near the Creative Education Centre and claimed the life of a taxi driver.
The taxi crashed into a pole and the driver had to be extracted from the vehicle.

Parents and staff of the school fear that such an incident will happen again and are imploring the City of Ekurhuleni to install speed humps along the road.
It has been claimed that speeding has always been a problem on this road and that motorists drive in excess of 80km per hour in the 40km per hour zone.
The school has sent many emails to the metro requesting speed humps but has not received any satisfactory answers.

Teacher June Baker said: “It’s unacceptable that this has happened. We have sent emails to the roads department, to the mayor and councillor Shadow Shabangu, but without luck.
“Whenever we send the metro an email, they tell us we are on a waiting list.”
Comment from the City of Ekurhuleni will be published once it has been received.
