Dead fish on Murray Park Dam

Dead fish a horrible sight for anglers

Fish in the Murray Park Dam are dying by the hundreds.
Local fishing enthusiast Willie Jordan said he was fishing at the dam two weeks ago when he saw the fish floating on the water surface.
“It’s horrible to see and creates a terrible smell,” he said.

Jordan suspects the fish are dying from a lack of oxygen caused by the invasion of hyacinth on the dam.
“It was always so nice to come and fish here, but how can you enjoy fishing when all you see is dead fish around you?

The hyacinth infestation may be responsible for the deaths of the fish.

“You can see the dead fish from the road when driving past the dam, so it’s terrible for everyone,” he said.
Jordan is also concerned some locals may consume the dead fish and fears the fish may contain toxins.
