Dumpsite a health hazard to Olympia Park learners
An illegal dumpsite on the corner of First Avenue and Tuin Street in Geduld is quickly becoming a health hazard for learners of Olympia Park School.
The dumpsite, which is down the road from the school, is filled with all kinds of rubbish such as soiled nappies, household waste and glass.
Olympia Park School principal Edith Warnick blamed the community within the vicinity of the school for dumping the rubbish.

“When the wind blows, the whole street is filled with rubbish and it becomes our responsibility to clean up.
“It’s not fair on my staff as we don’t know what’s in the dumpsite and it is especially dangerous for my children who walk through the area from town to get to school.
“It has really gotten out of hand,” said Warnick.

In addition to the danger the dumpsite poses, Warnick believes it is also a health hazard for everyone in the area, especially when a fire is started at the dumpsite as the fumes are unbearable.
The principal said they are at their wits’ end about what to do and are appealing to the City of Ekurhuleni to get involved so the culprits can be found and fined.
