Metro says its will suspend services for defaulters

The Covid-19 lockdown has left many people unable to work and has seen many more either lose their jobs or face salary cuts.

Some have found themselves unable to pay their bills, including their municipal rates.

The metro says payment arrangements are available to those who apply for them.

“This includes temporary payment extension and payment arrangements.

“Additional measures under consideration will be communicated on approval by council.

“If residents find themselves unable to pay their municipal bill, they should immediately contact their local Customer Care Centre in order to make payment arrangements,” says metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

When asked if the metro would suspend services for non-paying residents and businesses, Gadebe says disconnection of services will be applied in respect to defaulting customers.

The metro said the same principles would apply to businesses who also find themselves struggling during this time.

Gadebe also says the metro has applied for the R20-billion relief for municipalities that was announced by President Ramaphosa and their application is still pending.
