Local actor brings movie magic to Ekurhuleni

Kagiso Modupe, has shot his very first film, The Day I Lost My Dad, in his home town.

KwaThema – One of KwaThema’s own actors, Kagiso Modupe, has shot his very first film, The Day I Lost My Dad, in his home town.

“I decided to shoot the film in the East Rand because I’m sick and tired of hearing people say Kwatsaduza is emaplazini (farms).

“It’s normal to see a film crew shooting in Soweto, but why not here?

“I also want to inspire the youth because a lot of them see success in the creative arts as something they can’t achieve,” says Modupe.

Modupe is a well-known actor, radio host and motivational speaker.

He is also a successful television and film director/producer, musician, entrepreneur and Brothers for Life ambassador.

He won the hearts of more than six million viewers in South Africa and over 20 million around the African continent who for 14 years tuned in to watch him at his best as Mangi in one of the country’s leading soapies, Scandal, and now on Mzansi’s trending telenovela, The Throne.

Through this film he also managed to create a lot of jobs by hiring young talent, including extras, musicians, actors and interns.

He also supported local businesses who provided services such as catering.

“It is also a challenge to the structures.

“I had a few challenges in communicating with the metro about who can grant us permission to shoot and where.”

The movie tells the story of a previously successful white-collar professional, Thami.

Thami finds himself in the middle of a high-stakes hostage situation that sends his entire life into a tailspin.

“Whoever coined the phrase ‘hell hath no fury like a woman scorned’ had never heard of the lengths a man will go to in order to save his relationship with his child,” explains Modupe.

He says Thami was a super dad, loving and caring, and a faithful husband.

Connie Chiume (seated) is another one of Ekurhuleni’s greatest talents acting in Kagiso Modupe’s film ‘The Day I Lost My Dad’. Don Mlangeni (back) is also a cast member.

His wife was the envy of every woman who desires to have that close-to-perfect Mr Mom financially stable husband.

But when the going got tough, his wife got going and took his daughter with her.

“The Day I Lost My Dad is a beautifully told South African story about a young black successful man who takes matters into his own hands after life, the law and the woman he once loved come between him and his daughter.

“He puts himself in harm’s way to preserve the bond he has with his daughter, who loves him dearly despite his financial status, proving that ‘relationships are worth more than papgeld’.”

Papgeld is an Afrikaans word which means “money for food”.

It is also another term for child maintenance.

Modupe believes the film will resonate with any man who has ever found himself separated from his child by a vengeful mother.

Ayanda Borotho (right) and Tshimollo Modupe are part of the cast of ‘The Day I Lost My Dad’ by local actor Kagiso Modupe.

Modupe’s daughter, Tshimollo, is also in the movie.

She made her debut alongside her father on ETV’s flagship show, Scandal, when she was only six months old.

“We hope to highlight real-life issues, such as the burden of not being able to provide as a man and the challenges men face as a result of being failed by what most deem a biased legal system,” says Modupe.

Some of the most recognised faces from Ekurhuleni are Connie Chiume, Sindy Mabe, Hector Rabotapi and Xolani Jwaga.

Other well-known stars in the film include Thato Molamu, Samela Tyelbooi, Nolo Phiri, Don Mlangeni, Patrick Mofokeng, Mapaseka Koetle and Fezile Makhanya, to name a few.
