Fifteen75 Drummers impart a musical skill to the children of KwaThema.

Fifteen75 wants to focus on teaching learners, and even adults, local lyrical drumming.

KwaThema – Fifteen75 is an organisation that focuses on teaching learners, and even adults, local lyrical drumming.

The founder of the group, Sifiso Modikeo, says he started the organisation in 2014 but they are still working tirelessly to familiarise this kind of music to the people of KwaThema. Lyrical drumming is predominantly familiar in suburbs and private schools.

Children from townships have no clue that it exists.

Modikoe adds that he discovered lyrical drumming when he went to Belgium with an organisation called Field Band.

He fell in love with this and purposed to see South Africans exposed and excelling in this music.

Introducing and launching it in KwaThema is still difficult.

Lack of equipment makes people to lack commitment.

Sometimes in rehearsals, the drums are not enough for every child.

“People come and go because of such reasons,” adds Modikoe.

The equipment they use is expensive so they try not to take out everything during rehearsals in order to make the equipment durable.

In the near future they want to see themselves having built an art ccentre that would create a safe space for the young people in KwaThema in order to prune their talents and expose themselves to different forms of art as well.
