Mpumelelo attracting international clients on Vilakazi Street.

KwaThema – Mpumelelo Mahlangu’s dream of opening an art studio and helping aspiring artists hone their craft is becoming a reality.

After discovering his passion for fine crafting and sculpting, Mpumelelo Mahlangu has not taken a break from perfecting his art.

“I would get to school an hour early to buy myself time to work on my art.

“I entered my first competition in 2015 through the Springs Art Gallery,” he adds.

Mahlangu says that winning the Thami Mnyele Fine Arts competition validated him as an artist.

He established Inkanyezi Art Collaboration and Design to mentor aspiring artists and hope to distribute their work someday.

Last year Mahlangu had the opportunity to showcase his work at Shova Lifestyle Origin art gallery on Soweto’s Vilakazi Street.

“It was a wonderful experience because you get a wide variety of potential clients at a place like that.

“I got a lot of exposure.”

He has since been offered a mentorship spot at the gallery.

“I will be at Shova Lifestyle from February 22 until August.

“I just want to take in as much knowledge as humanly possible, because it is an opportunity of a lifetime.”

His work has been displayed at the gallery for a few months now.

Mahlangu says that Inkanyeni is not just about art.

He also runs an agricultural project, producing vegetables on a 60×65 square metre piece of land.

“We also help Grade 12 learners with mathematical literacy and accounting before their final exams.”
