Graphic designer dreams up beer fest in KwaThema

Walter’s Beer Festival is creating a craft beer haven in the hood.

Walter’s Beer Festival is creating a craft beer haven in the hood.

Festival founder Moemitse Makwe says he woke up with the idea a few months ago and spent all his hard-earned money to make it a reality.

“I am a graphic designer, so I am used to dreaming up ideas.”

Moe says he knew he had to jump into the deep end with this one.

“Most of us like to party, but we seldom make money from it.

“There is a huge market for the stuff we sell, so why not respond to the demand?”

Together with his brother Tshepang Mogedi and friend Lesego Makhele, he got Walter’s Beer Festival up and running.

Their first event was at Ndaba Tree on September 9, followed by the latest at The Venue on December 9.

“The name was inspired by the series Breaking Bad, where science teacher Walter White makes a desperate bid to earn money by creating a meth lab.

“In our case, we are the science teachers creating new flavours of beer.”

Moe believes the project will appeal to a lot of people because they only sell locally brewed beverages.

“Most of the beer people drink is imported.

“But we have good stuff being made right here at home, so why not?”

He says it is important to support local products while giving others the opportunity to be employed.

“If we bring these things closer to home, we make sure more of us get involved and we all benefit financially.”

He adds that they also cater for non-beer drinkers with their craft ciders and cocktails.
