Traditional music and dance groups invited to festival

Kwatsaduza – All groups performing in traditional dance, gumboot dance, Kofifi dance, traditional music or other similar genres are invited to participate in the Ubuciko my Talent - Ingoma Music and Dance Festival.

The event, which will be presented by I-Afrika Theatre, will take place at the Springs Theatre on the June 11 from 10am and the Tsakane Community Hall the following week, on June 18, from 10am.

“First up we will be the showcase, which will be hosted at Springs Theatre from which five groups will be selected to perform at the main event in Tsakane.

“The main event’s participants will not be competing, but they will be requested to perform and each group will have an attractive performance fee of R15 000 which will be given to them.

“The event is aimed at promoting traditional music and dance in Gauteng, more especially Ekurhuleni, and music/dance groups in these categories are all invited to participate as this opportunity is to help performers grow in experience and also gain some exposure,” says project coordinator Mbuso Mpungoso.

He adds that the theatre has been staging similar events for six years now and has, over the years, reached a vast number of participants from all walks of life.

“This is another way I-Afrika Theatre is investing in upcoming performers not only in money but in skill and growth opportunity as well.

“Interested groups can enter by downloading the form on I-Afrika Theatre’s website, send an email to and request one or come directly to our offices for a copy,” he says.

The closing date for entries is the June 6.

The community is invited to the two events where at Springs Theatre entrance will be free and for the main event at the Tsakane Hall entrance will be R20.
