KwaThema – Sicelo Dzingwa’s star continues to shine on the basketball court.

Two months ago, Sicelo (16), captain of the SA u/16 basketball team, was selected by Basketball SA to represent South Africa at Basketball Without Borders (BWB), a programme which is run by the National Basket Association (NBA).

The programme brings the top 100 basketball players in Africa together for a week long camp where they gain both basketball and life skills.

Even though Sicelo attends a school in Durban, he is still proud to be from the Rest in Peace section in KwaThema.

Sicelo started playing basketball when he was in Grade 8 at St Benedict’s College in Bedfordview. In 2013, after receiving numerous awards and through hard work and basketball excellence, Sicelo accepted a basketball scholarship from Durban High School, widely regarded as the number one basketball school in the country.

Sicelo was promoted to the first team, in his first year at Durban High School, and was the youngest player on the team. He has received provincial basketball colours for under 16 and 18, was recognised as the All Star Player at the St John’s College basketball tournament and was nominated twice as the sport star of the month by the KZN media.

Sicelo and the rest of the SA u/16 team are currently in Johannesburg on a camp before leaving for Mali on Sunday to play in the U/16 boys Afrobasket . “It is expected that the team will play well and qualify for the World U/17 next year,” Silo says.
