Loverboy a hairstylist of note

Lazaros 'Loverboy' Sumbane (22) has won two categories in a recent competition.

He is the National Championship for the Employer’s Organisation for Hairdressing, Cosmetology and Beaut champion and took second place.

He recently entered the competition where he won first and second place in the ladies total look with doing the hair of Zandile Maseko.

In the afro fashionable style and cut category, in the same competition he won second place with Xoli Hobe as model.

This Tsakane resident loves styling hair and looks back with fond memories of how he started as a cleaner at a salon at the age of 15 years.

While watching the salon owner working Lazaros soon became interested in the profession.

Within a year he opened his own salon in Tsakane and has qualified as a hair stylist at the beginning of the year.

Since 2012 he has entered several competition and also won a few.

During the first competition in he gained a lot of experience in styling hair.

He says he had to opportunity to do hair on SA Fashion week, which was a huge honour.

His saddest moment was when he won another styling competition, also in 2012, but was never rewarded with the prize.

The winning prize was an overseas trip, but two years has passed since and still nothing.

But soon after this fiasco he won the Ekurhuleni Community Award for best hairstylist and best hair salon.

Recently he was crowned the winner of the Employer’s Organisation for Hairdressing, Cosmetology and Beauty winner for the ladies total look category and took second place in the same category.

The model he used was Zandile Maseko.

In the same competition he won second place in the afro fashionable cut and style category with Felisha Mafindi as model.

During this competition each stylist was given 30 minutes to finish one style, but he had done it in 15 minutes.

This young man has set his goal high as a hair stylist and is currently involved in a television competition where 14 provincial winners are competing to be crowned as the best hair stylist in the Mzanzi Masters Challenge.

The overall winner will be announced in January.

He says as soon as the top 10 stylists are announced the SMS voting lines will be open to the public to vote for their favourite stylist on SABC2.

The details will follow in three weeks time.

“I feel so blessed that I would like to teach others to use their talents as hair stylists,” says Lazaros.
