KwaThema’s songbirds

KwaThema is known as the home of soccer legends but a new music group proves that music also exists in that township.

The African Poet Wonders is a music group in KwaThema that has existed for two years.

The group consists of five members who are between the ages of 18 and 21.

They are all from KwaThema’s Extension Two section.

They call their music the Kasi Soul, a mixture of many different music genres such as jazz, gospel and soul.

One of the group members who is a vocalist, composer and a guitarist, Vuyo Ngoma, says the group only consists of boys because they want to show the country that men can do music alone and be successful.

“In the township, the people that are known for music are women but we want to prove to them that men also can sing and be successful,” says a confident Vuyo.

Phumlani Mayoyo says it is the group’s dream to learn more in music and perform, not only in South Africa but win the hearts of the music fans from other countries.

He says they compose their own music.

“Each member in our group has a talent to produce good music and we have already produced more than 40 songs,” he says.

He adds that they have not recorded an album yet because they are struggling financially to make their dream come true.

“We are dreaming of being one of the biggest recording groups in the country, however, we need a sponsor to help us fulfil our dream,” says Wenzile Mthombeni, the group’s vocalist.

He says to raise funds for their group, they perform at churches, pubs and wedding ceremonies.

Wenzile believes that the group is not only meant to sing and give the listeners a feeling of excitement but is also meant to encourage the young people in the township to work towards developing their own talents.
