Time to put on the running shoes

Runners can compete in 5km, 16km and 32km distances.

DUDUZA – The Mamepe Striders Running Club in Duduza will host their second official road race, The Duduza Annual Community Run, on April 28.

Runners can compete in the 5km, 16km and 32km distances. The Mamepe Striders are affiliated with Central Gauteng Athletics. The chairperson of Mamepe Striders, Thabo Moorosi, looks forward to the event.

“We are proud and encouraged as a club for the strides we have achieved since our inception,” said Moorosi.

“We want to make running fashionable, accessible and attractive to all the folks in the townships.

“We are proud to have more children joining our development, making their presence felt in the track and field space,” added Moorosi.

Mamepe Striders has grown since it started as a running club. In their first year, 2022, they had five Striders men and no women ran in the Comrades Marathon.

Through hard work and their burning ambitions, the numbers grew in 2023. Mamepe Striders had 26 Striders runners, including seven women, do the Comrades Marathon, and the outlook for 2024 is even better.

“Our gratitude will forever go to our sponsors, who continue to believe this project is a necessity to help fight the social ills that confront our youth and defocus them from their future aspirations.

“Therefore, the Duduza Annual Community Run does not belong to the Mamepe team alone but to the community. It serves and includes the surrounding townships and suburbs. It is our own Soweto Marathon.

“This project’s success and legacy depends on the community’s support and the runners. While at it, I mention that a new distance (32km) was added, and the runners must come prepared,” concluded Moorosi.
