Mozambique trounces Kwa-Thema

The Kwa-Thema cricket team was defeated by Mozambique.

Kwa-Thema – The Mozambican national cricket women’s team played the Kwa-Thema Club Cricket Women’s Team at the Prince Thethe Oval at the Kwa-Thema Sports Complex on Monday.

Mozambique is on a warm-up training campaign as they will be heading to Botswana on Thursday for the Africa Cricket Association (ACA) women’s tournament.

On Sunday, Mozambique played against Actonville in Benoni.

Mozambican coach Thomas Pakane said, “As someone who grew up in Kwa-Thema and used to coach the cricket team, I saw it fit that we play against the team. I know Kwa-Thema has talent, and this will be a great practice match for my team.”

Pakane said the advice he would give to the home side would be for them not to be in a hurry to score fours and sixes but to start slowly to build an innings.

The home side, which batted first, lost to the national team with thrashing scores.

Kwa-Thema team captain Mpumelelo Mashiloane said, “I am glad for this opportunity. We had a good experience and enjoyed it a lot.”

“Never underestimate your opponents. We underestimated the team. We approached them with the attitude that they would not beat us,” Mashiloane continued.

Mashiloane said if they had approached the game with the attitude of having fun, they would have won it. She said the Kwa-Thema bowlers were inconsistent because they bowled many wides.

“We had a strategy but it was not followed.”

Kwa-Thema coach Mandla Nkosi said, “In defeat, we learn. This match was good motivation for our up-and-coming players because they had an opportunity to take on a national side.”

He said their bowling attack was poor, and had they scored 100 runs, they would have been able to defend and win.

“This is a warm-up for us as we are playing in the Schools League and gearing up for the cricket season,” Nkosi said.

The scores were:

  • Kwa-Thema: 52 all out after 19 overs
  • Mozambique: 53 for two after five overs
  • Mozambique won by eight wickets.
