Local disabled sports team recognised

Kwa-Thema – The Kwa-Thema Disability Club received a certificate for their contribution to sports and for making it to the finals of the Gauteng Sports Awards held at Gallagher Convention Centre recently.
The team was nominated in the Sports Team of the Year with a Disability and lost to Central Gauteng Lions Blind Cricket.

The Kwa-Thema Disability Club made it to the finals of the Gauteng Sports Awards.

The local team received a certificate in honour of the role they play in improving sports in the disabled community.
The event was organised by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation and is supported by the provincial Sport Confederation Council.

The awards ceremony has been running for 14 years and is aimed at celebrating and rewarding excellence among the remarkable men and women of sport in Gauteng who, despite the pandemic, gave their best over the period.
Coach Aubrey Mathibela said he is grateful for the recognition given to the team and support, especially when they have to travel abroad.
“We didn’t win the award this year, but we are grateful we made it to the finals.
“We are hopeful we will redeem ourselves again and win the award, like we did in 2016,” he added.
The team is preparing for the Gauteng Sports for the Physically Disabled trials, which will see them qualify for the Toyota SA Sports for the Physically Disabled National Championships. This is a platform aimed at nurturing athletes with physical disabilities and visual impairment.
The para-athletes compete in sports such as field and track athletics, boccia, goalball, judo as well as power-lifting.
