Tsakani – In 2015, after realising children in her street loved playing soccer but had nowhere to play the game, one active citizen decided to do something about it.
That’s how Prosper Stars Football Club and Star GLZ Netball Team were formed, and resident Matshidiso Silinda (48) never looked back.
“This happened around the same time I started my aftercare programme. On weekends you would find several children playing around with the ball, which was quite entertaining; however, my biggest concern was their safety since they would play on the street with cars passing by,” explained Silinda.
To date, she has over 40 soccer players and 30 netball players.

“When I started no one took me seriously. People still react funnily, especially when they find out I coach the soccer team. The love I have for children and wanting to see them become something in life or playing on a global stage continues to motivate me to work harder. Being recognised made me feel really special, but most importantly it made me realise the work I do with these players is important,” she said.
She explained how Covid-19 has affected them as a team.
“We are obeying what rules we have to in terms of the pandemic.
