Locals join Heritage Day run

“We are happy that residents who are not members of the club took the time to join us and actually complete the race."

Kwa-Thema- Kwa-Thema Striders celebrated Heritage Day by tackling a 10km fun run in Kwa-Thema.
The run, which attracted a number of residents, stretched from the corner of Tshabangu and Rapodile streets, and was part of the FNB RYCS Heritage Day Virtual Run.
Club runner Sibongiseni Skhosana said because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the organisers decided the race wouldn’t be hosted in Johannesburg as usual, but that each club would participate in their own areas.

Long-distance running takes discipline

“This was our chance to participate during Heritage Month celebrations, and because we are runners there was no other way we could do it without running.
“We are happy that residents who are not members of the club took the time to join us and actually complete the race. Participants enjoyed the run even though many have not exercised in months because of lockdown,” he said.
Skhosana said participants demanded regular fun runs in the area.
“They argued that areas like Soweto and Katlehong have their own races, yet we have running clubs which travel to these areas to participate.

Striders run the race against GBV

“We agreed to accommodate them because this will attract more people who want to lead a healthy lifestyle by being active.
“We are currently searching for sponsors for these fun runs and we are inviting local businesses to come forward,” he explained.
Skhosana is encouraging residents to join their club.
“For us to be a healthy society we need to start exercising and eventually young people will be drawn into a positive lifestyle,” he said.
