Athletics coach receives Ekurhuleni Sports Awards nomination

With an athletics career spanning for decades, Tenza’s resume in the sport speaks for itself. He added that this latest achievement is distinct from the rest.

Renowned athletics coach Benzi Tenza has been nominated by Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) for the Volunteer of the Year accolade at the Ekurhuleni Sports Awards, scheduled to take place at Montecasino on November 16.

Tenza, who is the founder of Team C16, an inclusive running team, said after learning about the nomination: “I felt motivated and encouraged. It’s a nice feeling to be recognised and appreciated. For me, this meant and confirmed that I am making a difference out there.”

Tenza is not only involved in the administration side of things of the sport he loves so dearly, he’s a participant too. He completed this year’s Comrades Marathon- his umpteenth- in eight hours and 57 minutes to claim the Bill Rowan medal.

During his interview with the Advertiser, he continued by acknowledging all involved towards his nomination, which, should it culminate in him picking up the prize, would be an addition to the Special Merit accolade he won at the 2017 Ekurhuleni Mayoral Achievers Awards.

“I’d like to thank CGA for the nomination. Other people who have contributed towards my nomination are the Team C16 members, who have allowed me to unlock and unfold their potential and gave me a chance to develop them as athletes.

“It is through them that I was recognised.”

“All the other awards that I have received before were about me and what I have achieved for myself. This award is about what I have done for others at no cost, and without expecting anything back. This makes this nomination very special.”
