Playing soccer in the name of Women’s Month

Innocent Mayoyo and SSS FC hosted the games to celebrate women in the best way they know.

KwaThema – Soccer lovers gathered at the Tlakula Grounds for the Imbokodo Games over the long weekend.

“We wanted to honour Imbokodo of our community as men,” says Mayoyo.

The 16 teams were made up of senior players.

“We want to take soccer back to the people, by playing in open grounds like this one.

“This sport can bring people together.”

Mayoyo says the competition also serves as a pre-season programme for the senior clubs.

In the one semi-final, Sibiya FC drawed 1-all with Amapiano FC.

Archar Boys won the Imbokodo Games and walked away with a R10 000 cash prize.

But Amapiano redeemed themselves with penalties, thrashing Sibiya by five goals to three.

In the other semi-final, Archar Boys also drew with Young Stars FC, with the match ending goalless.

But the penalties distinguished the men from the boys; Archar boys beat Young Stars 5-4.

“We are planning more activities that will include women,” adds Mayoyo.

In the finals, Archar Boys showed Amapiano FC what winners are made of by beating them 4-1.

The winners received R10 000 as a prize.

Mayoyo says the second leg of the tournament will take place next month.

“We are open for clubs to affiliate from now,” he explains.
