Disabled athletes to jet off to Paris

“We appreciate the continuous help of the mayor’s office and the athletes' parents who believe and support our sports and have faith that we can make it,” he says.

KwaThema – KwaThema Disability Sports Academy is proud that two of their athletes, Neo Gova (23) and Dimakatso Letageng (23), were selected to compete in the 2019 World Para Athletics Paris Grand Prix from August 28 to 30.

This is after months of the academy trying to source funds for the two players to be able to jet off to Paris, France.

The office of the mayor has made it possible for the two players and their coach, Aubrey Mathibela, to be able to fight to be crowned as winners.

During the competition, athletes will be competing according to their functional classification in each event.

Some compete in wheelchairs and some with prostheses, while those who are visually impaired receive guidance from a sighted guide.

Gova will compete in the 100m, 200m and 400m events and Letageng in shot put and discus.

Mathibela says he is proud of that his athletes are among the hundreds across the world to participate on the world stage.

“This shows that we are doing something good and we also deserve the world’s recognition.

“We are currently practising and working hard in sharpening our skills before the games,” he says.

Mathibela adds that at some point he lost hope that the two wouldn’t be able to attend the games because of the lack of funds for the flight tickets and accommodation.

“Now that we have that covered, all we can do is look forward to winning the games.

“We appreciate the continuous help of the mayor’s office and the athletes’ parents who believe and support our sports and have faith that we can make it,” he says.
