Local sports men collect gold medals

“We are hoping they excel in the games to be able to qualify for the World Games and Paralympics in 2020.”

KwaThema – Sports players from KwaThema Disability Sports Academy are flying the area’s flag very high after walking away with seven gold medals from the Ekurhuleni OR Tambo Soncini Social Cohesion Games at the Germiston Stadium last Saturday.

The games were part of the celebration of the centenary celebration of the late struggle veteran OR Tambo.

Team coach Aubrey Mathibela says he is proud of the players for following all his advice and teachings to ace the games.

“Mivuyo Tabata and Mbali Dlamini received two gold medals in 100m and 200m.

“Njavulo Sengwayo walked away with two gold medals in shot put and javelin while Nkululeko Nhlengethwa received one gold medal in shot put,” he says.

Aubrey says they are now preparing for the national championships for the physically disabled which will be held on Saturday.

“In this way the team will be representing Gauteng in the international games which they have been doing in the past years.

“They are working hard during practice and I believe they will do their best during the games,” he says.
