KwaThema Striders shocked by Jacaranda race short of 800m to qualify for Comrades Marathon

KwaThema Striders participated in the Jacaranda 42.2km Marathon in Tshwane on Saturday with the hope it will help the runners book a place in the 2019 Comrades Marathon.

KwaThema – KwaThema Striders participated in the Jacaranda 42.2km Marathon in Tshwane on Saturday with the hope it will help the runners book a place in the 2019 Comrades Marathon.

To their shock, they were informed by Comrades organisers this would not be the case.

The run was short of 800m for them to qualify.

KwaThema Strider Sibongiseni Skhosana says they were informed the organisers made a mistake.

“Instead of 42.2km the race was 800m short.

“This will not derail us from our plans, we will continue pushing to qualify for the race by participating in the upcoming Soweto Marathon.

“In 2018, we had one of the largest numbers of participants taking part in the biggest marathon and we are hoping we will have more runners qualifying next year,” he says.

Sibongiseni says they are calling on individual runners who are interested in joining the team to come forward.

“We believe no one is an island and through group support, we will be able to produce a winner one day.

“We train every Saturday from 5am at the corner of Kgaswane and Motlhaping streets for long-distance running,” he says.
