Running club receives sport grant from the metro

“We will be able to conduct the academy professionally moving forward because of this grant.”

KwaThema – Bayoyo Athletic Academy is one of the many sporting academies that received a grant from Ekurhuleni Municipality recently.

The grant has benefited the 60 young runners in the team.

Bayoyo Athletic Academy coach, Charles Vilakazi, says through the grant they were able to afford some of the equipment for the team.

“We are grateful for the donation because through the years we were running on a zero budget and could not afford sporting gears especially tracksuits for the runners.

“We used to envy the other teams because we didn’t have anything to identify us with.

“We now have tracksuits, gazebos, two laptops, a printer, proper running shoes for the runners, chairs for all the runners and other equipment.

“We will be able to conduct the academy professionally moving forward because of this grant,” he says.

Charles says they have also used the funds to award some of the best performing runners.

“This is to motivate them to excel during the competitions.

“Some of the money will be used for travelling expenses and accommodation for the runners when they have to compete outside the province,” he says.

Charles further encouraged parents to enroll young runners into the academy to keep them away from the streets.
