On their way to championships

Three boxers from Bigger Walker Boxing Club have made the cut for the Gauteng team for the Sanabo Youth Championships next month.

Tsakane – Nhlanhla ‘Legend’ Mtshali (15) says his interest in the sport was sparked when he saw it on TV.

“The first day I got into the ring I just knew that I could be really good at it.

“It was only a year after I started boxing.”

Legend says the highlight of his young career has been winning the Best Boxer award at the Gauteng Provincial Boxing Tournament in Chesterville, October 2016.

Manqoba ‘Mad Cobra’ Khuzwayo (17) says boxing drew his attention when he really had no other interests.

“I just took a chance and it paid off.”

Sfiso ‘Destroyer’ Malinga (16) says: “We were just idling ekasi so I joined the club.

“In my third fight, I got a TKO in the third round.”

He says doing well in the tournament will put the club on the map.

The boys will participate at the Sanabo Youth Championships between August 3 and 5 in Limpopo.

“It has been such a great pleasure training the boys and seeing them grow in the sport.

“I always get excited when they take big stages,” says Charles Mtshali, the founder of Bigger Walker Boxing Club.

The boxers train at different clubs around Ekurhuleni in preparation for the tournament.

“We still need a lot of support from the public, especially private business.

“We want to provide the boxers with the best training equipment, but we lack funds.

“It is really a shame because most of them are really dedicated to the sport.

“I would hate to lose that momentum,” said Mtshali.
