Karate tournament to commemorate community role model

Karatekas from Ferkandos Karate Club commemorated the legacy of Oupa ‘Chicken’ Dube for the contribution he made to the sport in the area.

Duduza – Participants from across the country gathered at Duduza Stadium to fight to be crowned number one in the annual tournament.

Dube, who was a dedicated karate fighter and teacher, encouraged young people to participate in the sport.

Karate coach Linda Ngubane says they decided to celebrate Dube annually to ensure his legacy lives on.

“He was one of the residents who should be celebrated for the contribution they made to uplifting the community.

“He used to invite young people to participate in the sport to avoid loitering or committing criminal activities.

“He taught them discipline, dedication and respect for themselves and their community.

“He was a positive role model in the community and a community builder who would go out of his way to help others,” he says.

Ngubane says they are encouraging young people to join local karate clubs.

“For us to win the fight against crime and drugs, we need young people to work with us and meet us halfway because we offer training for free,” he says.
