Winter games to stimulate and keep children busy

Tintswalo Community Centre hosts winter games to keep the little ones in Extension 12 busy during the holidays.

Tsakane – Professional social workers Lydia Mokoena, Unathi Mtayiya and Fatima Mathebula started the initiative to give the children a safe place to play.

Mrabaraba stimulates these minds.

“There are enough activities to keep the children active while they are encouraged to socialise.

“We want them to enjoy being together.”

The trio believes that it is not beneficial for children to spend too much time in front of the TV and on their phones.

Children try out hula hooping.

“We understand that parents are busy, some still need to go to work.

“But we are also concerned about the health of the children and keeping them stimulated.

“Playing makes a really good workout.”

Their ages range from three too late teens.

Skipping rope is so much fun.

The games include ntsuba, mrabaraba, netball, soccer, skipping rope, deketo, hula hoops, mgusha and bhathi.

Tintswalo Community Centre is an aftercare for recovering addicts after they are released from rehab.

“If they idle and have nothing to keep them occupied they often relapse.

“We organise skills development with different stakeholders.”

Busy with netball.

They also stage family reunification interventions.

In the winter games campaign, they are supported by We can do this, LoveLife and Twin Plugs Entertainment.

The sporting equipment was lent by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation.

“We are happy with the turnout.

“The community is helping us with water and toilets throughout the day.”
