Recycling for a clean environment

Dan Radebe Primary School was a hive of activity as schools came to together for a day of sports to commemorate World Environment Day and to raise awareness around recycling.

Duduza – Philemon Msimango, the brainchild behind the sports day, in partnership with Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa, seeks to promote a clean environment for the next generation to thrive in.

“I wanted to bring the children together, not only to have fun but to learn as well.

“Recycling is an easy way for us to keep our environment clean while making money from the waste,” says Msimango.

Dan Radebe girls clashed with Thembalikazulu Primary School in the second round of the tournament on Saturday.

Eight primary schools from Duduza and KwaThema participated in the netball and soccer tournament.

In attendance was ward councillor Thabo Patrick Motaung from Ward 98 and members of South African Police Services.

Motaung said, “This is a fantastic initiative. We need to raise awareness about the need for environmental conservation and encourage children and communities to do something positive for the environment.”

The kick-off for both netball and soccer started at 10am with Dan Radebe vs James Nkosi Primary Schools, Iphahamiseng vs Mmuso Primary Schools followed by Thembalikazulu vs Duduza Primary School then finally Thakgalang vs Khangezile Primary Schools.

Dan Radebe Primary School emerged as the winners of the soccer knockout challenge and James Nkosi clinched the netball challenge.

The waste collection prize will be split equally between the two schools.

The waste collection prize consists of all the plastic containers gathered on the day, contributed by the schools and members of the public.

CCBSA CSI specialist Unathi Mbanya said, “The company strongly believes in public and private partnerships. Such initiatives help in encouraging communities to be proud of their living spaces”.
